The daily pull is the quietest part of an MCA until the morning it fails.
An authorization signed at funding becomes a series of electronic debits, and each debit either clears, with the balance falling accordingly, or returns with a code that sets a sequence in motion the contract has already priced. The owner who understands the pull, the code, and the sequence negotiates from the file rather than from surprise.
Surprise is the most expensive adviser in the transaction.
At signing the business authorizes the funder to debit the operating account on a fixed schedule, daily in most agreements, in amounts set against estimated receipts. The authorization, the schedule, and the account designation together form the machinery that moves money before any dispute arises.
Each entry travels the Automated Clearing House network as a debit the bank either honors or returns. A cleared debit reduces the purchased balance under the agreement, while a returned debit leaves the balance untouched and starts a separate chain of events governed by the bank record on one side and the contract on the other.
The daily pull operates the way a meter attendant operates on a street with no legal parking: the mechanism is accurate, and it has no interest in the reason the car is there. Receipts determine whether the mechanism hums or bites, which is why the cash forecast belongs beside the authorization from the first week.
There is a particular quiet in an office when the owner refreshes the bank page before staff arrive. That quiet has a code attached to it by midmorning.
Nacha guidance on return reasons tied to authorization comes before any interpretation of what a bounce proves, because the code classifies the transfer and nothing beyond it. R01 means insufficient funds. R09 means uncollected funds. R10 concerns the absence of recognized authorization and R11 concerns an entry inconsistent with the authorization given.
By this point the owner knows what the bank saw, which is the smaller half of the problem.
The timeline distinction matters as much as the code. Nacha micro entry guidance on business and consumer timelines allows sixty days on the consumer side for an R10 return and two banking days for a nonconsumer R29 entry, and internet summaries that promise every business sixty days should be set aside (the pages that make that promise are not written with commercial accounts in mind, and the bank applies the classification on file rather than the one the owner prefers).
A return code is not a ruling on the MCA agreement. In LG Funding v. United Senior Properties of Olathe, New York appellate judges looked past the purchase label to reconciliation, a finite term, and bankruptcy recourse when assessing whether repayment was absolute, which confirms that validity questions turn on the substance of the whole arrangement rather than on any single morning at the bank.
The bank may assess its own charge for the returned entry. The agreement may add a missed payment fee, and the two charges should be recorded apart from each other until each is confirmed.
The funder responds with a notice restating the amount due. A demand framed as a cure may arrive with it. Counsel can review and analyze whether that demand tracks the notice provisions and remedies stated in the contract.
Resist the urge to answer the notice with a promise the receipts cannot support. A creditor may treat continued shortfalls in order to build a default record against the company or a guarantor, and anything admitted about the balance, even briefly, narrows the positions available later.
The first notice reads as routine. Rarely does the second one.
A second and third return change the posture without changing the paperwork. The funder moves from processing to collection, and the owner should assume every subsequent communication is preserved.
Keep the dated sequence intact. The pattern, so far as the ledger reconstructs it, tells counsel whether the business faces a temporary gap or an obligation the receipts never supported.
Simply gather the bank record, the agreement, and the current forecast before contacting either the bank or the funder, since a defined question supported by documents produces a faster answer than an apology supported by hope.
Delancey Street offers a free confidential initial review for owners under MCA collection pressure. The company provides debt settlement services and coordinates legal matters with independently licensed counsel; it is not a law firm (no settlement review can promise that the next scheduled pull will not be presented).
We would ensure the proposal names the accounts covered, the communication channel used with each funder, and the written confirmation the owner receives if any adjustment is accepted. The objective is to ensure the next debit meets a plan rather than a scramble.
Protect and preserve every notice, code, and confirmation in one file, because the sequence the owner can prove is extremely useful when the discussion turns to what was owed, what was paid, and what the record shows about the difference. A complete sequence is extremely persuasive where a partial one invites dispute. That file is the one counsel reaches for first, and consultation is where its contents become a course of action.
Most funders accept 30–60% as a full settlement — with proper leverage.
